Our Story

Scalzo Hospitality is a third-generation, family-owned hotel management company built on the entrepreneurial spirit of our founder, Carmen Scalzo—a first-generation Italian American who believed in the American Dream. His instinct for location and guest service laid the foundation for a family legacy that we honor to this day.

Today, we focus on hotel management, leveraging three generations of ownership and a disciplined operating system to deliver the structure and accountability needed to transform assets into long-term value.

Carmen believed that hospitality rooted in values and committed to guest experiences would be remarkable. More than seventy years after he started our family’s journey, we are so committed to that legacy that we’ve made it our promise to Deliver Remarkable Hospitality.

Our Legacy

In the 1950s, our founder, Carmen Scalzo, launched his hospitality business with vision and grit—building three motels, one after the other, in Sacramento, California: the Crest, Sands, and Acienda. He operated the Acienda for several years before expanding to Anaheim, California, where he developed three more properties along Harbor Boulevard: the Sands, Desert Inn, and Park Vue Inn. Walt Disney had recently opened the gates to Disneyland, and there was hardly a hotel in sight. His instinct for location and belief in hands-on operation and warm guest service laid the foundation for a family legacy that continues to shape our company today.

But Carmen’s success took a toll on his health. When the Park Vue Inn opened in 1962, he leased the business, hoping to slow down. Unfortunately, his lifestyle change came too late. Carmen passed away just a few months later.

After partnering with hotel operators for three decades, Carmen’s daughters—Patricia Durand, Grace Lindsay, and Marie Baird—stepped in to return the business to its roots and play a more active ownership role. Within just a few years, the business became a true multigenerational family affair, with several of Carmen’s grandchildren helping lead sales, revenue management, finance, and strategic growth. Under the leadership of Patricia’s sons, Paul Durand and Patrick Durand, Scalzo Hospitality developed, acquired, renovated, and rebranded numerous hotels and restaurants, including franchise partnerships with Marriott International.

Today, Carmen’s legacy has entered a new chapter, with the first non-family member in a top leadership role, marking a milestone in Scalzo Hospitality’s continued growth and transformation.

More than seventy years later, we’re not only proud of our family legacy, we’re more committed than ever to Delivering Remarkable Hospitality.
